Sculpture and Ceramics Exhibition: More Artists

Ceramics, with it's contradictory nature, reflects something human back to us.  Simultaneously resilient, formed and strong, also vulnerable, uncertain and receptive.  The featured ceramic artists in this exhibition capture the beauty, essence and diversity of clay whether in a functional form or purely as ascetic sculpture. And not just clay either.  Bronze, wood, wire and paper.

Tania Babb captures fleeting personal moments in her sensual sculptures, John Bauer with his unique porcelain plaques which bare witness to the magic that can emerge from introducing textural elements such as lace, coins and woodblocks.  Lisa Firer graces us with her beautifully embellished, layered porcelain vessels with Cape Fynbos motifs.  Giovanna Biallo's sculptures with their classical forms are colourfully playful, including Hennie Meyer's distinct earthenware vessels with their subtle curves and hints of colour.  Sandy Godwin will exhibit her light, lace inspired clay creations and Diane Harper will show her  decoratively painted and embossed plates.

Well-known foundryman Etienne de Kok will feature a few of his bronze castings, including an "moveable maquette for a moving fountain" and Friday Jibu from Bronze Age Foundry will be exhibiting a selection of incredible carved wooden skulls.  To name a few more this post.

To view more fabulous ceramic and sculptural artworks come join us on Wednesday 4th July at 6pm for an exciting evening at Kalk Bay Modern.

More artists: Sculpture and Ceramic Exhibition

Ceramics - clay fired (heated at very high temperatures) thus forever changing its molecular structure - is an alchemical process from start to finish.  From the choice of clay to the firing techniques through to the glazes and slips chosen.  The beauty and magic of this craft and artform lies in its elemental nature.  As an ancient craft of creating form from something essentially formless, our approach to pottery, ceramics is continuously transforming the possibilities of this earthy and tactile medium.

As mentioned in previously Kalk Bay Modern will be featuring over 20 ceramic artists for the upcoming Sculpture and Ceramic Exhibition on 4th July 2012.  Today we'll continue by introducing a few more big names in the South African ceramic art world.  The Mervyn Gers Collective made a distinct impression at this years Design Indaba 2012 and will displaying dark-glazed, organic forms while Helen Vaughn's textual, earthenware vessels rhythmically reflect the natural world.  David Walters will present his smoke-fired (a fascinating process!) porcelain bowls, Gemma Orkin, famous for her tactile and beautifully illustrated earthenware will feature tall, playful vases.  Christo Giles will grace us with his celadon and shino glazed forms with feminine curves and oriental lines, while Michael and Anthea Methven will be exhibiting one of their incredible animal light sculptures, a springbok luminaire.  Should be spectacular!

Upcoming exhibition: Sculpture and Ceramics

Kalk Bay Modern is excited to introduce our upcoming exhibition titled "Sculpture and Ceramics" opening on Wednesday 4th July 2012.

The contemporary ceramic scene in South Africa is diverse, dynamic and evolving.  As ceramic artists continue to further explore the distinction between sculptural/conceptual forms and functional objects through their unique oeuvres, this art form is fast gaining recognition in the art world both locally and internationally.

The gallery is proud to be featuring over 20 different South African ceramicists in this exhibition.  For this entry we'll be introducing renowned and local names in the ceramic art sphere, such as ceramic artist Lisa Ringwood whose handbuilt functional ware draw inspiration from daily life and the natural world, Louise Gelderblom who coils African influenced sculptural vessels, Wilma Cruise whose interest lies in the metaphorical relationship between human and animal form, Katherine Glenday well known for her ethereal,  light-infused porcelain work capturing gesture or echoing nature, Clementina van der Walt well known for her colourful and iconic functional ceramics, and Christina Bryer famous for her flawless, geometric porcelain and 3D mandalas.

The new Kalk Bay Modern – Gallery & shop

For a surprising collection of contemporary modern art, seek out the first floor entrance of an enigmatic gallery situated opposite Kalk Bay harbour. The New Kalk Bay Modern gallery and craft shop showcases an eclectic mix of local South African art talent along with quality crafts from developing community groups.

Kalk Bay Modern treats you to a veritable arts feast from the delicate ceramics of Katherine Glenday and Christina Bryer, to the vibrant textiles of Yda Walt, as well as the ethereal fynbos jewellery of Nic Bladen or the playful and funky jewellery by Meagan Meredith. We also feature a smorgasbord of photographic talent from George Hallet to Amelia Smith, and some etchings by Colbert Mashile, Deborah Bell and Jane Eppel. You’ll also find a sprinkling of sensitive paintings by Gail Catlin along with other established South African artists such as Peter Clarke, Max Wolpe, Hylton Nel, Judy Bumstead, Charles Gassner and many more.

The gallery specialises in contemporary Bushman Art from three different San communities. The !Xun and Khwe were featured at an exhibition held at the National Gallery in Cape Town. San artists work such as Flai, Hendelina, Simon, Abraham and Filipus are all available for sale at the gallery. Gallery owner, Cheryl Rumbak has a special relationship with the Namibian Bushmen community for whom she held several painting and print-making workshops and can elaborate on the individual artists and their work. Alternatively their work can be bought as beautifully printed fabrics off the roll or as quality home décor products such as tablecloths, duvet covers, bags and placemats. These San textiles were launched at the Design Indaba last year and proved an enormously positive opportunity for generating welcome financial aid in terms of royalties from the sold meterage for their communities.

Kalk Bay Modern is also a window for local artists and crafters and actively aims to promote South African designers and the use of recycled materials. Cheryl was also employed by the CCDI (Cape Craft and Design Institute) to help develop, promote and market the products of Zambane’s potato printed textiles, the wire furniture from Willard Musarurwa of Feeling Africa, lighting by Heath Nash and Brett Murray and papier-mache bowels by AIDS project Wola Nani.
