More artists: Sculpture and Ceramic Exhibition

Ceramics - clay fired (heated at very high temperatures) thus forever changing its molecular structure - is an alchemical process from start to finish.  From the choice of clay to the firing techniques through to the glazes and slips chosen.  The beauty and magic of this craft and artform lies in its elemental nature.  As an ancient craft of creating form from something essentially formless, our approach to pottery, ceramics is continuously transforming the possibilities of this earthy and tactile medium.

As mentioned in previously Kalk Bay Modern will be featuring over 20 ceramic artists for the upcoming Sculpture and Ceramic Exhibition on 4th July 2012.  Today we'll continue by introducing a few more big names in the South African ceramic art world.  The Mervyn Gers Collective made a distinct impression at this years Design Indaba 2012 and will displaying dark-glazed, organic forms while Helen Vaughn's textual, earthenware vessels rhythmically reflect the natural world.  David Walters will present his smoke-fired (a fascinating process!) porcelain bowls, Gemma Orkin, famous for her tactile and beautifully illustrated earthenware will feature tall, playful vases.  Christo Giles will grace us with his celadon and shino glazed forms with feminine curves and oriental lines, while Michael and Anthea Methven will be exhibiting one of their incredible animal light sculptures, a springbok luminaire.  Should be spectacular!

Upcoming exhibition: Sculpture and Ceramics

Kalk Bay Modern is excited to introduce our upcoming exhibition titled "Sculpture and Ceramics" opening on Wednesday 4th July 2012.

The contemporary ceramic scene in South Africa is diverse, dynamic and evolving.  As ceramic artists continue to further explore the distinction between sculptural/conceptual forms and functional objects through their unique oeuvres, this art form is fast gaining recognition in the art world both locally and internationally.

The gallery is proud to be featuring over 20 different South African ceramicists in this exhibition.  For this entry we'll be introducing renowned and local names in the ceramic art sphere, such as ceramic artist Lisa Ringwood whose handbuilt functional ware draw inspiration from daily life and the natural world, Louise Gelderblom who coils African influenced sculptural vessels, Wilma Cruise whose interest lies in the metaphorical relationship between human and animal form, Katherine Glenday well known for her ethereal,  light-infused porcelain work capturing gesture or echoing nature, Clementina van der Walt well known for her colourful and iconic functional ceramics, and Christina Bryer famous for her flawless, geometric porcelain and 3D mandalas
